Description

The Palani is a five-candle candelabra cast in aluminium and finished in antique brass. A single stem rises from a shallow round foot and divides into branches that curve out and up, each one ending in a cup. The five cups sit at five different heights with the centre one highest, and the two sides are not mirror images of each other, so the outline is uneven rather than a symmetrical fan. The branches are slender and smooth, the cups are faceted in shallow planes, and the foot is left rough from the casting.

At 53cm tall this is a centrepiece for a dining or console table, and it carries the flames well above the eye line of anyone sitting at it. The branches span 27cm across but only 14cm front to back, so it occupies a narrow strip down the middle of a table and leaves the settings either side of it clear. The cups take dinner candles.

The metal is aluminium, sand cast. Molten metal is poured into a cavity packed in sand and left to cool, then the cast is broken out of the sand to release the shape, which is why the foot and the branches carry the marks of it. The form is drawn from spring flowers. The antique brass is a finish over the aluminium rather than solid brass. Palani runs to two: this five-candle Large and a three-candle Small. Candles are not included.

Frequently Asked

How many candles does it hold?

Five, one in each cup.

What sort of candle does it take?

Dinner candles. They are not included.

Is it solid brass?

No. It is cast aluminium under an antique brass finish.

Is there a smaller one?

Yes. The Small takes three candles.

How do I look after it?

Wash it with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it, as they will damage the finish.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Seat each candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
