Description
The Palaemon is an oval eyelid bulkhead light made from solid brass and finished in satin nickel, a soft brushed silver. A curved hood shades the upper half of the clear ribbed glass like a half-closed eyelid, two bars cross the glass as a guard, and four screwed lugs sit at its corners. Two slim slits in the hood send narrow beams of light up the wall, while the ribbed glass spreads light downward and outward. It is 21cm long, 12.5cm wide and 12cm deep. Rated IP64, it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it lives outdoors in British weather throughout the year.
Put it beside a front door, in a porch, on a garden wall or on a boathouse or workshop, anywhere outdoors that calls for an industrial or nautical look. The maker says its bulkheads were designed for exactly that, and that the maritime influence shows in the range's materials, designs and names. Satin nickel suits cooler schemes such as grey render, slate and white walls. The uplight slits are the detail people notice: after dark they paint two stripes of light on the wall above it, so a plain entrance gains a little theatre even before the door opens.
The maker says it is robustly designed and built and will outlast contemporary lighting, and at 2.4KG the solid brass body has the heft to match. The cable enters through a gland at the end or through the rear, and a brass blank is included to take the gland's place when you choose the rear entry. It takes one E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W; the lamp is not included, so choose a bulb within that limit. As with any mains light, it should be installed by a qualified electrician, and the two entry points give them a choice in how the cable reaches the light.

Frequently Asked
Can the Palaemon bulkhead light be used outdoors?
Yes. It is rated IP64, which means it is dust-tight and protected from splashing water, so it can live outside in British weather all year beside a door, on a garden wall or on an outbuilding.
Can I put this bulkhead light in a bathroom?
Its IP64 rating means it can be considered for a bathroom, and a qualified electrician will confirm the right zone for your room.
What bulb does it take, and is one included?
It takes one E27 (ES) lamp of up to 18W. The lamp is not included, so choose a bulb within that limit.
How big is the Palaemon bulkhead light?
It is 21cm long, 12.5cm wide and 12cm deep, and it weighs 2.4KG, which reflects its solid brass construction.
What does the satin nickel finish look like?
Satin nickel is a soft brushed silver over the solid brass body, a quieter look than polished metal, and it suits cooler schemes such as grey render and white walls.
What do the slits in the hood do?
They are decorative uplight slits: after dark they cast two narrow stripes of light up the wall above the bulkhead, alongside the light spreading through the ribbed glass.
