Description

A square cushion cover, 50 by 50cm, woven by hand from jute and cotton in a thick looped yarn. The weave runs on the diagonal and the colour moves as it goes, so bands of soft blue cross bands of brown and sand across the face. The loops stand well proud of the ground, nearer a rug than a flat fabric, and the edges are finished plain with no piping. This is the cover on its own; the inner is not included.

At 50 by 50cm this is a full sized square cushion, the one that goes at the back of a sofa or into the corner of an armchair rather than the small one in front. Set among linen and undyed cotton, the blue reads cool against the sand and the brown, and the raised weave stands out against the flat weaves beside it.

The fabric is jute and cotton. Jute is a rain fed crop that needs little in the way of fertiliser or pesticide, and the fibre spins into a strong thread; cotton is worked in alongside it. The cover is woven, braided and stitched on an Indian handloom, so the thickness of the yarn and the run of the bands differ from one cover to the next. Paduna is also made as a rectangle, 60 by 40cm, in the same colours.
