Description

The Padal is a woven cushion cover, 50cm square, in green and undyed cream cotton. The ground is a flecked weave, deep green and cream plied together so the colour breaks up rather than lying flat, and it runs in horizontal bands across the face. Two rows of cut fringe cross the full width, one above and one below a pale central band that carries a line of small dark lozenges between fine stripes. The fringe lies flat against the weave rather than hanging off an edge.

Square at 50cm, this is the size that goes at the back of a sofa or upright against an arm, where the whole face is visible and the fringe is not pressed flat. It stands behind the wider size of the same cover. Against flat weaves and plain cotton the banding and the two fringe rows carry the texture. In a room the green reads cooler and closer to teal than it does against a white ground.

The cover is cotton throughout. It is woven on a handloom, with the pattern and the texture built in as the weaving goes, and the fringed borders are finished by hand, so the depth and the fall of the fringe vary from one cover to the next. The Padal cover is also made in a wider, shallower size.
