Description

The large round Otoro in green is a flattened sphere 45cm across and 32cm tall, in glass tinted a soft smoky green. At this size the tint has more glass to work through, so the shade reads greener at the sides than at the top where the wall thins. It is closed all round apart from a small opening at the top and a flat circular foot underneath. A brass collar caps the opening, the lampholder hangs inside it, and a black chain runs up to a black ceiling rose 14cm across.

At 45cm across and 5.9kg this is a fitting to hang on its own, and a ceiling fixing that will carry it. The light comes down in a wide circle and out through the tinted glass at head height, so the shade is lit as well as the room. A living room, a hallway or a stairwell suits it; it is rated IP20, so it belongs in dry indoor rooms and not in a porch or a covered outdoor space. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, it is dimmable, the flex runs 1.5m, and the height can be adjusted by an electrician.

The glass is recycled and blown by hand into a mould, so the depth of the green and the wall thickness change from one shade to the next. The frame and fittings are iron with a brass collar at the neck. The Otoro range runs to nineteen pieces: round and oval shades in small and large, in clear, green, smoke and honey, plus a cluster pendant and four wall lights. Bulbs are not included.

Can it go in a porch or a covered outdoor space?

No. It is rated IP20, which is an indoor rating with no protection against water. It is for dry indoor rooms only.

Is the chain brass like the clear ones?

No. The green shades come on a black chain and a black ceiling rose 14cm across. The collar at the neck of the shade is brass on both.

How is it different from the small round?

The small is 31cm across and 21cm tall against 45cm and 32cm here, and 2.14kg against 5.9kg.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the bulb cool, then wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
