Description

The small oval Otoro is a tall egg of clear glass, narrow at the top where a brass collar caps it, swelling to its widest below the middle and drawing in again to an open rim at the bottom. The glass is smooth and thin enough to hold highlights along its length, and it is clear all through, so the brass lampholder hanging inside from the collar is in view. A brass chain runs up beside a brown fabric flex to a brass ceiling rose. It is 30cm long and 20.5cm across.

The shade is open underneath and clear all round, so the light goes everywhere: down through the rim onto whatever is below, and out through the glass at the level of the shade. That makes it a fitting to hang low, over a kitchen island or a table, where the shade is at eye level and the bulb inside it is part of what is seen. At 20.5cm across it is narrow enough for a row of two or three along a run. It takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, it is dimmable, the flex runs 1.5m, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The glass is recycled and blown by hand into a mould, so the wall thickness and the small marks in it differ from one shade to the next. The fittings are brass. The Otoro range runs to nineteen pieces: oval and round shades in small and large, in clear, green, smoke and honey, plus a cluster pendant and four wall lights. The oval is the tall shape and the round is the flattened one. Bulbs are not included.

What is the difference between the oval and the round?

The oval is the tall shape, longer than it is wide. The round is a flattened sphere, wider than it is tall. This is the small oval, 30cm long and 20.5cm across.

How is it different from the large oval?

The large is 44cm long and 30cm across against 30cm and 20.5cm here. The shape, the glass and the fittings are the same.

Will the bulb be visible?

Yes. The glass is clear and the shade is open at the bottom, so the bulb shows through it and directly from below.

How do I clean it?

Switch it off and let the bulb cool, then wipe the glass with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
