Okuta 150 x 240cm Block Print Jute Rug - Olive Green

A jute rug, 240cm by 150cm, block printed by hand over an olive green ground. The pattern is dense and runs to a wide border: a central diamond medallion, scrolling stems, palmettes and small birds, worked in amber, rust, brown and a pale pink that reads almost as cream. A fringe is finished by hand along each short end.

At 240 by 150cm this is a room-sized rug rather than a mat. It will run the length of a three-seat sofa with an armchair beside it and take the front feet of both, or sit alongside a bed with the frame standing off it. On a stone floor the olive green holds against grey stone rather than sinking into it, and the fringes lie loose at each end.

The rug is jute. The fibres are woven first and the pattern put on afterwards with carved blocks, in the way Jaipur textiles are printed, building the colour up in layers. Because the pattern goes on block by block, the depth of colour varies across the field. The fringes are finished by hand at the end.

How do I look after it?

Blot any spill straight away with a clean sponge or cloth. Vacuum it with care and not with a rotating brush head, which can damage the fibres. It can be professionally cleaned, and colours may fade in direct sunlight.
