Oko Large Giant Glass Bauble - Matt Teal

A glass bauble 20cm across, hand blown in a matt teal that sits between blue and green. The surface is mottled rather than even, flecked with darker specks and small patches where the colour has broken up, and it holds a low sheen instead of a shine. A dark iron cap is fixed at the top with a ring through it, and a printed fabric tie hangs from the ring.

At 20cm across and 0.61kg this is a heavy bauble, so on a tree it wants a strong branch near the trunk rather than a twig at the end of one. It also hangs on its own, from a beam, a curtain pole or a hook, and a pair of them go well together against a plain wall. The Oko giant is also made at 15cm, and the two sizes hang together well. It is blown glass, and it wants careful handling.

The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is blown, and the blowing is what leaves the irregular mottling, so no two baubles carry the same pattern. The cap and the ring are iron. The Oko giant is made in four colours, matt teal, matt green, matt gold and matt bordeaux, and each colour comes at 15cm and at 20cm.

How do I look after it?

Take the dust off with a dry, soft cloth and handle it carefully, since it is glass. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from the finish.
