Description

The Oko is a glass Christmas bauble 20cm across, large enough to hang on its own rather than among a group. The surface is matt rather than mirrored, and the gold underneath shows through in patches with darker brown and near-black clouding over it, so the colour shifts around the sphere. The neck is closed with a pressed metal collar and a ring, and a long printed fabric tie is knotted through the ring.

Twenty centimetres across and 0.61kg is heavy for a bauble, so it wants a thick branch low on a tree, or a hook, a beam or a door frame away from a tree altogether. The tie is long enough to drop it well below whatever it hangs from. Two can hang at different heights, and the matt surface holds light as a soft glow rather than a bright point.

The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to remove impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is blown by hand, and the irregular mottled pattern comes out of that, so no two baubles carry the same markings. The collar and ring are iron and one bauble is supplied. The Oko giant bauble is also made in a small size, and in green, bordeaux and teal as well as this gold.
