Description

Four baubles built from wire alone, with no glass and no filling: two round and two drawn out into a long pointed spindle. The wire is looped into a diamond lattice that gathers to a point at the top and the bottom of each shape, so every bauble is hollow and the far side of the mesh shows through the near one. The finish is a bright brass, and each hangs from a green velvet tie knotted at the top.

An open bauble takes light from behind rather than bouncing it back, so on a lit tree the lattice reads as a bright outline with the branch visible through it. The set runs to 15cm at its longest and 7cm across, and the two shapes hang to different lengths.

The wire is iron under a brass finish, sculpted and joined by hand with traditional tools. The technique is basketry with wire in place of wicker, which is what gives the lattice its even diamond. The ties are green velvet, and the four together weigh 0.12kg.
