Description

The Nila Esha is a rectangular cushion cover, 60cm by 40cm, woven on a handloom from cotton and jute in a loose open weave that leaves the grain of the yarn visible across the whole face. The ground is a natural straw colour. Two narrow bands of fine indigo stripe run the width of the cover, and between and around them a rust embroidery is worked in zigzags and rows of diamonds, with small indigo stitches set into the centre of each diamond. The embroidery stands proud of the weave.

At 60cm by 40cm this is a bolster shape rather than a square, so it lies across the seat of a sofa or along the back of a chair where a 50cm square would stand upright. The natural ground keeps it close in tone to a linen or a pale cotton, and the rust and the indigo are carried in the pattern rather than across the whole face, so it reads as texture from across a room and as embroidery close to. It sits in front of the square size.

The base is cotton and jute, woven on a traditional Indian handloom and then embroidered by hand, so the run of the zigzag and the weight of the stitching differ from cover to cover. The jute gives the ground its colour and its coarseness and the cotton carries the stripe. The Nila Esha is made in this 60 by 40cm and in a 50 by 50cm square, both in the same rust and indigo.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

60cm by 40cm. The same cover is made as a 50cm square.

What is it made from?

Cotton and jute, woven on a handloom and then embroidered by hand.

Will the colours run?

No. All the cushion covers and throws are tested for colourfastness.

Will every cover look the same?

Closely, but not exactly. Each cover is embroidered by hand, so the run of the zigzag and the weight of the stitching are different on every one.

How do I look after it?

Always follow the cleaning guidance on the label. Many covers are washable, but some fabrics are spot clean only. Lift any liquid with an absorbent tissue first, then blot the area with a sponge or a clean folded towel moistened in lukewarm water. To avoid water marks, dry the area by blowing warm air across it from a hair dryer. Larger or more stubborn stains should be dealt with professionally.
