Description

The Nila Esha is a square cushion cover, 50 x 50cm, handwoven in cotton and jute. The ground is a coarse open weave the colour of straw, with fine indigo stripes running across it in bands. Over that ground a pattern is embroidered by hand: rows of chevrons and small diamonds in rust, worked in a heavier thread. The stitching sits on top of the weave rather than in it, so the pattern is raised to the touch as well as to the eye.

At 50 x 50cm this is the square, and the Nila Esha is also made as a 60 x 40cm rectangle. The ground is pale enough to sit against a natural linen sofa without much contrast, so it is the rust and the indigo that carry at a distance. The embroidery catches the light along the raised rows.

The base is cotton and jute, woven on a traditional Indian handloom and then embroidered by hand, so the count of the stitches and the run of the chevrons differ from cover to cover. The rust and indigo is a single colourway across both sizes. The Nila also runs a second design, the Gul, in rust.
