Description

A quilted bedspread measuring 220 by 240cm, with a cotton velvet face in a soft rust and a natural linen reverse. The quilting runs in narrow parallel channels, each line worked in a hand run Kantha stitch that shows as small even stitches across the velvet. The channels lift the surface into low ridges, so the rust reads lighter along the raised lines and deeper in the troughs between them.

At 220 by 240cm it covers a King bed with a drape down both sides and enough left to turn back across the pillows. On a Super King, turning it so that the 240cm side runs across the bed gives a longer drape at the sides. It goes over made bedding rather than in place of it, and at 4.1kg the weight of the velvet keeps it where it is put rather than working its way off the foot of the bed.

The face is cotton velvet and the reverse is linen, which is why the two sides fall differently. The Kantha quilting is stitched by hand, line by line, so the spacing of the channels and the length of the stitches vary slightly across the piece and from one bedspread to the next, and a contrast stitch finishes the reverse. The bedspread is also made at 220 by 140cm, and in sage green, natural, dusty pink, charcoal and moss.
