Description

A quilted bedspread 220cm by 140cm, with a cotton velvet face in a deep moss green and a natural linen reverse. The two layers are held together by Kantha stitching worked by hand in running lines across the whole surface, which draws the velvet into soft ridges between the rows. On the linen side the same stitching shows as a contrast thread against the undyed ground.

Two hundred and twenty centimetres across covers a King bed with a drape either side, and 140cm down the bed reaches the foot and the lower half rather than the whole of it. Turned the other way, so the 220cm runs head to foot, it drops further on a Super King. Laid across the lower two thirds of a bed and folded back, both faces show at once. It is reversible, and the linen face can go uppermost instead.

The face is cotton velvet and the reverse is linen. The velvet holds the quilting where a flatter fabric would let it settle out, and the linen keeps the weight down and lets air through. Every line of Kantha stitch is sewn by hand, so the rows run a little unevenly and the ridges sit at different depths across the width. The same bedspread is made 220 by 240cm, and in rust, charcoal, sage green, natural and dusty pink.
