Description

A wine cooler blown from recycled glass, 22.5cm tall and 18.5cm across the mouth, tapering in towards a narrower foot. The top two thirds are a smoked grey-green, frosted rather than clear, with the surface pitted and uneven. The bottom third carries a distressed metallic finish in a rusted cream that runs upward in streaks and fades out rather than stopping at a line. The rim is plain and a little out of true.

At 18.5cm across the mouth it takes one bottle standing upright with ice packed round it, and at 22.5cm tall the neck and shoulder of the bottle stay clear of the rim. It weighs 0.65kg empty.

The glass is recycled, and here it is blown into a mould rather than free blown: a shape is carved into a heatproof case, the molten glass is blown into it and the piece is fired in a kiln, with the metallic finish going onto the lower part last. Because the blowing is done by hand, the wall thickness and the depth of the smoke vary from piece to piece. The Ngolo range also runs to tealight holders, baubles and a vase in the same aged smoke.
