Description

This round side plate is made of black stoneware, 18cm across and 2cm tall, with fine ridges that radiate from the centre out to the rim like the spokes of a wheel. The ridges run right to the edge, so even seen side on the plate shows its fluted outline. They give a plain black plate real texture without any printed pattern, and the centre carries a gentle fleck in the glaze. At 18cm across it sits in side plate territory: smaller than a dinner plate and the right size for bread, a starter, a slice of cake or a pudding. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, well suited to daily use.

It earns its place at the breakfast table and the dinner table alike. Set one to the left of each place setting for bread and butter, bring out a stack for starters when friends come for supper, or use them with coffee and cake in the afternoon. The black glaze makes a strong backdrop for food: pale bread, green leaves, bright fruit and cream all stand out against it.
