Description

A vase, 35cm tall, in natural. At 18cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. An empty vase is still doing something if the form is right, and that is the test to apply before buying: if it only works filled, it is a container rather than a piece. Most vases spend more of the year empty than full.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. Art Deco is a geometry rather than a colour: stepped lines, fans and hard symmetry. It sits deliberately against plain modern walls and comfortably in a period room, which is why the style has outlasted several revivals of it. Terracotta is unglazed fired clay, so it is porous — it breathes, it darkens where it is watered, and it develops a chalky bloom over time. Planters are made from it for exactly that reason.

At 2.92kg it is heavy enough to stand on the floor without being knocked over by a passing foot.
