Description

A bench 122cm long and 46cm deep, with a leather pad set on a slim iron frame. The leather is buttoned through in a close grid, so the surface breaks into rows of square pockets, creased where each one is pulled down and full where it rises between. The colour is a mid brown that lightens across the raised parts and darkens in the folds. The frame is square section iron in a pale grey, four straight legs with a rail running round under the top, and the pad sits proud of it with a gap between the two.

It stands 46cm tall overall with a seat height of 44cm, the difference between the two being the depth of the buttoning. That is a little lower than a dining chair and close to the height of a bed frame, so it sits at the end of a bed without standing above it. At 122cm two people can sit side by side. The frame is open on all four sides and carries no stretcher between the legs, so the floor under the bench stays clear for shoes or a basket in a hallway.

The pad is leather and the frame is iron. The leather is left with its creasing and its shifts of tone showing rather than corrected flat, so the pattern of marks across the buttoning differs from one bench to the next. At 12.8kg it is light enough for one person to carry.
