Description
The Naryla is a lantern 14cm tall and 13cm across, built from a mouth blown glass shade standing on a turned mango wood base. The glass is a squat onion shape, wide and round at the belly and drawn in to a short straight neck with a plain cut rim. The base is a solid disc of mango wood with a straight side, stained dark so the grain runs through it as darker and lighter bands. A shallow turned wooden dish sits on the floor of the glass and the candle stands on that.
At 14cm this is a small lantern for a table rather than for a floor or a mantel: a place setting, a window ledge, a bedside, or a run of them down the length of a table. The glass is clear and its widest point is low, at about the level of the flame, so the light spreads out sideways rather than up the neck. A tealight stands in this size and a pillar candle in the larger one.
The glass is recycled. Waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed, melted and mouth blown into a mould to form the shade. The base is mango wood, a by-product of mango farming, and the grain differs from base to base. The dark stain is an alternative to the natural mango wood the Naryla is otherwise made in, and the lantern is also made at 23cm tall and 25cm across. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked
How big is it?
14cm tall and 13cm across. The same lantern is made at 23cm tall and 25cm across.
What candle does it take?
A tealight, standing on the turned wooden dish on the floor of the glass. The larger size takes a small pillar candle.
Is the glass recycled?
Yes. The waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed and melted down before it is mouth blown into a mould.
Can it be used outdoors?
No. It is for indoor use only.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the wood with a cloth will protect it, though it may darken the tone. To take off excess wax, use warm water with a mild dish soap, dry it immediately and do not leave it to soak.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Position the candle securely, keep the flame away from the glass, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
