Description

The Naryla is a lantern in two parts: a clear glass dome and a turned mango wood base it stands in. The glass swells out from a short open neck into a rounded body and draws back in at the foot, the shape of a bulb. The base is turned with a shallow well at its centre for the glass to sit in, and a dark metal cup is recessed inside that well to take the candle. The whole thing stands 14cm tall and 13cm across.

The small Naryla takes a tealight; the larger one in the range takes a small pillar candle. The top of the glass is open rather than closed over. The two sizes stand together on a sideboard, the larger behind and this one in front. At 14cm it sits on a sideboard, a windowsill or a table without blocking the view over it. It is for indoor use.

The glass is recycled and the base is mango wood, turned so the rings of the cut run round it. The grain and the depth of tone shift from base to base, so no two are alike. Naryla is made in two sizes. The candle is not included.

What should I know before lighting it?

Stand the candle securely and keep the flame away from the glass. It gets hot in use, so keep it from children, let it cool fully before moving it and never leave it burning unattended.

How do I look after it?

Wipe the wood over with a soft dry cloth and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Warm water and a mild dish soap will take off excess wax; dry it straight away and do not let it soak. An edible oil rubbed into the wood will protect it and will darken the tone.
