Description
The large Nampo is a box lantern, 36.5cm tall and 14.5cm square, built as an iron frame glazed on every side. A hipped roof sits on top with a flat collar above it and a folded strap handle laid over that. The front is divided into narrow vertical panels by slim bars and hinged along one edge so that it swings open, while the sides are single panes. The frame carries an aged antique finish, warm and dark by turns and uneven from bar to bar, and the base is a solid tray on a stepped plinth.
It takes a pillar candle, standing on the metal floor inside. At 36.5cm it is the taller of the two Nampo sizes, the small being 28cm, and the two are often set together; a pair either side of a fireplace or a doorway is the other way they are used. Lit, the bars break the flame into separate lights across the glass.
The frame is iron and the panels are recycled glass. The waste glass is collected and washed to take out impurities, then crushed, melted and mouth blown into a mould to form each panel, which is framed in metal and fitted into the base and the top. The aged antique finish is applied by hand, so it falls unevenly and no two lanterns are marked the same way. A candle is not included.

Frequently Asked
How big is the large Nampo?
36.5cm tall and 14.5cm square. The small is 28cm tall and the same 14.5cm square.
Does it open?
Yes. The front is hinged along one edge and swings open to reach the inside.
What candle does it take?
A pillar candle, standing on the metal floor of the lantern. No candle is included.
Can it go outside?
No. It is for indoor use only.
How do I look after it?
Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth so that dust and dirt do not build up, and use a microfiber cloth in a circular motion on the glass. To take off excess wax, use warm water with a mild dish soap, then dry it straight away and do not let it soak.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Stand the candle securely with the flame clear of the glass, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
