Description

The Nalla is an armchair upholstered over the whole frame in a charcoal wool woven in a fine herringbone. The back is tall and straight with a soft roll along the top, and the arms are low and turn outward in a scroll, sitting well below the line of the back. One loose seat cushion lies on the base with a piped edge running round it, and a small rectangular slumber cushion leans against the back. The only wood on show is the legs: the front pair turned in mango wood with a knop and rings, the back pair plain and tapered, all four in a pale natural tone against the dark wool.

The chair stands 96cm tall, 80cm wide and 92cm deep, and the seat is 54cm from the floor, 51cm across and 71cm deep. That seat depth is what makes it a chair to settle back into rather than to sit upright in, and the slumber cushion fills the space behind the small of the back. It suits a reading corner or a quiet end of a room rather than a seat pulled up to a table.

The upholstery is wool and cotton over the frame, and the legs are mango wood. The chair is hand upholstered in a small workshop in India using traditional skills and natural materials, and the legs are turned by hand, so the grain and the profile differ from chair to chair. The slumber cushion is included. The herringbone reads as a plain dark grey from across a room and shows its zigzag only close to.
