Description

A handwoven rug, 150 by 240cm, worked in a grid of short black bars set out in columns across a natural jute ground. The bars do not line up neatly. They break and shift along their length, and towards the middle of the rug a denser block of them turns to read as one solid mark. The weave is coarse and ridged, so the face carries as much texture as pattern.

At 150 by 240cm the rug takes the floor in front of a sofa with the front feet standing on it, or covers most of a small room. On bare boards in a living room the black and the natural mix from across the room into a mid grey-brown, and the bars only resolve close up. It is 1cm thick and weighs 5.7kg.

Waste leather from the fashion industry is gathered and shredded into fine strips, then woven by hand together with jute. Because the strips are offcuts, the tone and the weave shift from one rug to the next and no two come out alike. The Nadiki rug is also made at 200 by 300cm.
