Nadi Grooved Wood Pendant Light - Natural & Antique Brass

The Nadi is a solid mango wood dome: a narrow cylindrical neck at the top opening into a broad bell with a plain rim at the bottom. The whole outside is cut with fine horizontal grooves, close together, running without a break from the neck to the rim, so the surface reads as a stack of rings. The wood is built up from slim planks and the joins show as changes of tone down the body, from a pale grey brown to a warm red. Inside, the face is left smooth. A brass ring at the crown takes an antique brass chain with a rust coloured flex through the links. It is 32cm tall and 44cm across.

The shade is solid, so all of the light goes down through the open rim and none of it up or out to the sides. That makes it a fitting for a surface rather than for a room: over a dining table it lights the table and leaves the walls dark, and over a kitchen counter it does the same on a smaller footprint. The smooth pale inside catches the light and warms it on the way out.

The shade is mango wood on an iron fitting, the grooves cut by hand after the planks are joined, so the spacing of the rings and the run of the grain differ from one shade to the next. The chain and the ring are finished in antique brass. It takes one E27 bulb up to 40W, it is dimmable, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. Bulbs are not included.

Does any light go upward?

No. The shade is solid wood, so the light leaves through the open rim only and the ceiling above it stays dark.

Why does the colour change across the shade?

It is built from slim planks of mango wood joined together and the wood is not matched for tone, so the joins show as bands of lighter and darker grain.

Will the colour stay the same?

Mango wood changes tone over time, so the shade will move a little with age.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the wood.
