Description

The Mvua is a pillar candle holder made from a piece of antique cart wheel, 35cm tall and 12cm across. The column is turned, swelling at the top and the foot and drawn in through the middle, and a row of rectangular openings runs around the waist. An iron dish sits on the top with a spike at its centre, and that is what holds the candle. The timber is deeply weathered, split along the grain and marked all over from its first life.

At 3.56kg it is heavy for its size and will not shift once it is set down. At 35cm it stands well above a coffee table top, so the candle sits above anything else on it. The openings around the waist catch the light from the side and read as a band of shadow across the column.

The wood is reclaimed and the dish is metal. Each holder was part of a wooden cart wheel before it was anything else, and the shaping keeps the markings and the patina of that earlier use, so the grain, the tone and the texture vary from one to the next. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

What kind of candle does it take?

A pillar candle. The iron dish on top carries a spike at its centre, so the candle sits on the spike rather than dropping into a socket.

Is a candle included?

No.

What is it made from?

Antique reclaimed wood with a metal dish. Each one was part of a wooden cart wheel before it was shaped into a candle holder.

Are they all the same?

No. The wood is reclaimed, so the grain, the tone and the texture vary from one to the next, and the markings each piece carries are its own.

How should it be looked after?

Keep chemical cleaners away from it, and wipe it over regularly with a cloth so dust does not collect in the openings.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes, it will. Set the candle securely on the spike, keep the holder out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
