Description

The Munir is a rectangular cushion cover, 60 x 40cm, handwoven in linen. The face is worked in two blocks divided by a straight line across the width: the upper part a dark charcoal that reads brown against the light, the lower part the pale natural tone of the flax. Both blocks are broken into narrow vertical panels by raised ribs, and the slub in the yarn changes from panel to panel, so the weave is open and uneven in places and close in others.

At 60 x 40cm this is the rectangle in the Munir range and the 50 x 50cm is the square. The charcoal block sits along the top edge, so stood on a sofa the dark half stays above the arm and the pale half runs down behind a seat; turned the other way up, the pale half takes the top. Lying long on a pale sofa in front of a square cushion, the two tones read as one band across the seat rather than as a pattern.

The cover is linen throughout, woven on a traditional Indian handloom. The slub in the yarn, the density of each panel and the exact line where the two tones meet shift from cover to cover. The Munir also runs as a matching throw.
