Description

The Mohani is a faceted glass lantern in a brass frame, 26cm tall and 20cm across. Flat panes of clear glass are soldered edge to edge in brass strip, trapezoids around the top and the foot and a band of diamonds set on point around the belly. The body is narrow at the base, full through the middle and drawn in to an open top, and a hinged brass hoop stands over it to carry or hang it by.

At 26cm this is the smaller of the two Mohani lanterns and it stands on a surface rather than on the floor. The top is open, so a candle drops straight in and can be lit in place. The hinged hoop means it can hang from a hook indoors as well as stand on a table, a mantel or a windowsill.

The panes are glass and the frame is brass, given a deep antique tone. Each frame is welded by hand to fit its own panes, and the metal is soldered around the glass with traditional tools, so the joins carry visible weld marks and no two are identical. The panes are cut in several different shapes and sizes rather than in one repeating facet. The Mohani range also holds a larger lantern at 35cm. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

Is a candle included?

No. The lantern is sold on its own. The top is open, so a candle can be set inside and lit in place.

How do I clean a lantern?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth to stop dust and dirt building up, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. To take off excess wax, use warm water with a mild dish soap, then dry it at once and do not leave it to soak.

Can it be used outdoors?

No. It is for indoor use only.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Stand the candle securely and keep the flame away from the glass. Keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.

Why are the joins uneven?

The metal is soldered around each pane by hand with traditional tools, so weld marks show along the joins. They are a record of how the lantern was put together.
