Mika 50 x 50cm Recycled Cushion Cover - Black & Natural

The square Mika cover is 50cm on each side, woven in black and undyed cream. The pattern is built from short horizontal dashes laid in close rows and gathered into upright bands that change colour across the face, so the eye reads stripes at a distance and a grid up close. Where the ground is black the dashes come up cream, and where the ground is cream they come up black.

A 50 by 50 square is the standard size for the back of a sofa or an armchair. On a pale or neutral sofa the black ground reads as the darker note. The weave is open and the surface is textured, though the finish itself is soft. The yarn is shower proof, so the cover also suits a garden room or a covered porch.

The thread is spun from recycled plastic bottles. Polyethylene terephthalate recycles well and most soft drink bottles are made from it; broken back into its original monomers it can be spun into a yarn that looks and handles much like cotton. Cotton is woven in alongside it. The inner is not included, and the range also runs a 60 by 40 rectangle in the same two colours.

Is a cushion inner included?

No. The cover is sold on its own.

Is it really made from plastic bottles?

Yes. The bottles are broken back down into their original monomers, and the thread that results is spun into a yarn which looks and feels close to cotton.

Can it go outside?

The yarn is shower proof, so a covered spot is fine. The colours may fade in direct sunlight.
