Description
The Knightsbridge Metal Clad 20A 1-gang DP switch combines a double-pole 20AX switch with a galvanised steel enclosure in a single surface-mounted unit. The switch is rated at 20 amps and isolates both live and neutral lines when turned off, providing additional safety for high-draw fixed appliances or workshop equipment. The back box is built into the unit, removing the need for a separate recessed box to be chased into the wall.
Designed for industrial, workshop, garage and outdoor undercover installations where surface mounting is preferred or where chasing into masonry is impractical, the metal clad construction protects the switch mechanism from dust, impacts and rough handling. The powder-coated galvanised steel resists corrosion in damp environments better than standard plastic-bodied switches, and the IP20 rating confirms protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm. The 82mm square faceplate and 45mm projection from the wall give a robust presence suited to utility spaces rather than decorative interiors.
The switch terminals accept standard twin-and-earth cable via screw fixings behind a removable rear cover, and an earth terminal is provided inside the enclosure for bonding. The white rocker insert sits within the grey steel faceplate, with a red indicator window visible when the switch is in the ON position. Knightsbridge backs this unit with a 25-year warranty, reflecting the durability expected from metal-clad industrial accessories.

Frequently Asked
What is double-pole switching and why does it matter?
Double-pole switching isolates both the live and neutral conductors when the switch is off, providing a complete break in the circuit. This is safer than single-pole switching for high-draw appliances or equipment where maintenance might require guaranteed isolation. The 20AX rating handles loads up to 4,600W on a 230V supply.
Does this need a separate back box?
No. The metal clad enclosure includes the back box as part of the unit, so it mounts directly onto a flat wall surface using the fixing holes on the rear. This makes installation simpler in workshops, garages and industrial settings where surface mounting is standard.
Can it be used outdoors?
The IP20 rating means it is not weatherproof and should not be used in locations exposed to rain or direct water ingress. It is suitable for covered outdoor areas such as under eaves, in open-sided workshops, or in garages where moisture is present but direct wetting does not occur.
What does the red indicator show?
The red window on the rocker becomes visible when the switch is in the ON position, providing a clear visual indication that the circuit is live. There is no neon indicator — the red window is a mechanical indicator that moves with the rocker.
