Description

The AVSL Mercury is an IP55-rated weatherproof unit combining a single 13A switched socket and a separate 1-gang 10A switch behind two independent transparent PVC covers. The moulded polycarbonate housing carries an IP55 ingress protection rating against dust and water jets from any direction, allowing installation in outdoor locations where exposure to rain and airborne dust is expected.

Designed for garages, patios, workshops and outbuildings where mains power is needed outside the primary building envelope, the Mercury provides both switched socket power for tools, garden equipment or outdoor lighting, and a separate switched circuit for controlling external circuits such as security lighting or water features. Each function sits behind its own hinged cover, so one can remain closed while the other is accessed. The 150 x 90 x 63mm housing mounts to an exterior wall via rear fixing points or can be surface-mounted onto a backing plate.

The unit arrives with two M20 cable glands pre-fitted for incoming supply and outgoing circuit wiring, plus nine additional M20 knockouts in the housing base and sides for multi-circuit installations or daisy-chaining multiple units. The impact-resistant polycarbonate construction handles typical outdoor knocks and UV exposure without cracking or discolouring over the first few years of installation. The white finish matches standard outdoor electrical accessories and blends into rendered or painted masonry.

Frequently Asked

What does IP55 mean in practice?

IP55 means the unit is dust-protected (limited ingress that won't interfere with operation) and protected against water jets from any direction. It can handle rain, hose spray and dusty environments, but is not submersible or suitable for locations where standing water collects.

Can this be used fully exposed to weather?

The IP55 rating allows installation in locations exposed to rain and dust, but AVSL recommends sheltered locations such as under eaves, in carports, or recessed into external walls where the unit isn't taking the full force of driving rain or prolonged direct sun.

What wiring connections are provided?

The unit is supplied with two M20 cable glands for incoming supply and outgoing circuit cables. Nine additional M20 knockouts in the housing allow for multi-circuit installations or loop-in/loop-out configurations where multiple outdoor sockets or switches are chained together.

Does the switch control the socket?

No. The switch and socket are separate functions behind separate covers. The socket has its own integral switch for local isolation. The 1-gang 10A switch is an independent circuit switch intended for controlling outdoor lighting, pumps or other fixed circuits.
