Description

The Mercury European converter plug adapts CEE7/16 Europlug 2-pin plugs to UK 3-pin BS1363 sockets, with an integrated 5A fuse protecting the connected device from overcurrent. The plug body is manufactured to BS1363-5 and BS EN50075 standards, providing a compliant interface between European low-current appliances and UK mains voltage.

Designed for laptop chargers, phone adapters, electric shavers, and other low-wattage European devices drawing up to 1,150W on 230V mains, the converter sits in a standard UK socket and accepts the 4mm-spaced pins of CEE7/16 Europlugs. The hinged fuse carrier allows the 5A fuse to be replaced without tools if it blows, using a standard 20mm cartridge fuse available from most electrical retailers.

The black polycarbonate body measures approximately 60mm x 55mm x 40mm and sits flush against the wall when plugged into a socket, minimising projection in tight spaces behind furniture or in hotel rooms. The converter does not add earthing to unearthed European plugs — it is intended for Class II double-insulated appliances only, not for high-draw earthed equipment. The hinged design allows the converter to be levered out of tight sockets without damaging the faceplate.

Frequently Asked

What devices can this converter be used with?

The 5A fuse rating limits use to devices drawing up to 1,150W on 230V. This includes phone and laptop chargers, electric shavers, hairdryers rated under 1kW, and other low-current CEE7/16 Europlug appliances. It is not suitable for high-draw devices like kettles, heaters, or power tools.

Does it provide earth protection?

No. The converter adapts 2-pin unearthed Europlugs to UK sockets but does not add an earth connection. It is intended for Class II double-insulated devices only, which do not require earthing. Do not use with devices that have a 3-pin earthed European plug.

Can the fuse be replaced?

Yes. The fuse carrier is hinged and opens without tools. Replace with a standard 20mm cartridge 5A fuse, available from electrical retailers. Always replace with the same rating — using a higher-rated fuse removes overcurrent protection.

Is it safe for permanent installation?

The converter is designed for temporary or intermittent use, such as travel or visiting devices. For permanent installation of European appliances, rewiring the appliance with a UK plug or fitting a fixed converter outlet is safer and more reliable.
