Description

The Mercury 15m cable reel provides four 13A mains sockets on an open-drum design with 15 metres of orange high-visibility cable wound onto a moulded plastic frame. A thermal cut-out inside the drum housing prevents overheating if the reel is used while partially or fully wound, shutting off power before the cable temperature reaches unsafe levels.

Designed for workshop, garage, garden and construction site use, the reel handles loads up to 3120W when the cable is fully unwound and 1200W when wound on the drum. The open-drum design allows air circulation around the cable when in use, reducing heat build-up compared to closed-drum reels. The wide rectangular base provides stability on uneven surfaces and the moulded top handle allows one-handed carrying even with the cable fully loaded.

The orange cable colour improves visibility across outdoor work areas, reducing trip hazards in low-light conditions or overgrown sites. The reel is fitted with a BS1363 13A fused UK plug and conforms to BS1366 standards for cable reels. Each of the four socket outlets is a standard UK 13A three-pin type, allowing simultaneous connection of multiple power tools, work lights or battery chargers within the total load limit.

Frequently Asked

What happens if I exceed the load rating?

The built-in thermal cut-out automatically disconnects power if the cable temperature rises beyond safe operating levels, which typically occurs when the load exceeds 1200W with the cable wound or 3120W unwound. Once tripped, the cut-out must cool before power is restored.

Can I use this reel outdoors?

The reel is not rated for permanent outdoor installation or exposure to rain. It can be used in covered outdoor areas such as garages, carports and dry sheds, and temporarily in dry weather for garden power tools, but should not be left outside or used in wet conditions.

Why is the load limit lower when the cable is wound?

Cable wound tightly on the drum generates heat that cannot dissipate efficiently. Running high loads through wound cable causes cumulative heating that can damage the insulation. The 1200W wound limit prevents this thermal damage.

What cable specification is used?

The cable is a flexible orange PVC A05VV-F 3x1.25mm² rated for 13A at 240Vac, conforming to BS EN 61242. This specification balances flexibility for repeated winding with current-carrying capacity for the 13A fuse rating.
