Description

The Mengwi is a bar stool turned and jointed from mango wood, 70cm to the top of a round seat 36cm across. The seat is a single thick disc with a slightly dished top and a squared edge, and four round legs taper from underneath it to the floor, splaying out to a 40cm footprint. Low stretchers run between the legs at two heights and take a foot.

Seventy centimetres is the seat height, which falls between the two usual ones: counter height is about 65cm and bar height about 75cm, so the underside of the counter is worth measuring before ordering. At a kitchen island the seats clear the underside with room to cross a leg. With no back and no arms the stool pushes fully under an overhang when it is not being sat on, and the widest point is the 40cm splay of the legs at the floor rather than the seat.

The wood is mango, pale and open grained, worked with traditional carpentry and left its own colour. The seat is cut from solid timber, and a fine split can open at the edge where the board has moved, which is what solid wood does. At 5.2kg it is light enough to move along a counter with one hand.

Frequently Asked

What height bar stool do I need for a kitchen island?

The seat on this one is 70cm from the floor. Counter height is usually about 65cm and bar height about 75cm, so measure the underside of your counter before ordering.

How wide is the seat?

36cm across. The legs splay to a 40cm footprint at the floor.

Does it have a footrest?

Low stretchers run between the legs and take a foot.

What is it made from?

Mango wood.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry it straight away. Mango wood suits humid air, so in a centrally heated house it can dry out and crack. An edible oil such as olive or walnut worked into the surface will feed it, though it darkens the tone and has to be put back after a wash.
