Description

Mendo is a set of four beige placemats woven from bamboo and cotton. Thin bamboo slats lie side by side across each mat, bound together by a contrast thread that builds short, regular stripes over the whole surface, and the thread is left loose at each end as a soft fringe. Up close, you can see every slat and stitch; from across the room the mats read as a calm beige with a gentle rhythm of stripes. With four in the pack, a table for four is dressed in one go.

These are table mats first: lay one at each seat on the kitchen table for a relaxed, natural look that works as well on an ordinary weekday as when friends come round. The beige weave looks especially good on a dark or painted table, where the stripes stand out, and it sits just as happily on oak or pine. Their woven texture softens a smooth, glossy tabletop. Away from the kitchen, a single mat makes a neat, textured base on a sideboard, console or hall table, under a plant pot, a candle holder or a small stack of books.
