Description

The Mbata small stands 20cm tall on a flat round disc 6.5cm across, with a long tapering stem carrying a deep flute-shaped cup at the top for a dinner candle. Nothing on it is turned true: the stem runs a little out of line, the disc is uneven around its edge, and the surface is pitted and hammered the whole way up rather than smooth.

A flat disc instead of a domed foot keeps the base of the candlestick almost level with the table, and at 6.5cm across it takes very little room for its height. The three Mbata sizes stand in a row, stepping from 20cm through 30cm to 40cm, and each takes a taper.

The metal is aluminium, and the rustic surface comes out of the soldering rather than being applied over the top of it. Because each one is worked by hand, no two stems fall the same way. Mbata runs at 30cm and 40cm as well, and as a candelabra. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

20cm, on a disc 6.5cm across.

What candle does it take?

A dinner candle, in the cup at the top.

What are the other sizes?

30cm and 40cm.

What is it made of?

Aluminium, with a rustic antique brass finish.

How do I look after it?

Wash with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
