Description

The Mbata large is 40cm tall on a flat round disc 9.5cm across. It is almost all stem: a long tapered rod running three quarters of the height before it opens into the deep flute of a cup at the top for a dinner candle. The metal is pitted and hammered the whole way up, and the disc is left uneven around its edge rather than trued.

At 40cm the flame sits at about the eye level of someone sitting down, which puts it above a table rather than across it, so this one belongs on a sideboard, a mantel or the end of a run rather than between two place settings. The disc takes 9.5cm of surface. Mbata is made in three sizes and this is the tallest.

The metal is aluminium, and the rustic surface is produced during soldering rather than applied over the top afterwards. Every piece is worked by hand, so the stems lean differently and the finish takes differently on each one. Mbata runs at 20cm and 30cm as well, and as a candelabra. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

How tall is it?

40cm, on a disc 9.5cm across.

What candle does it take?

A dinner candle, in the cup at the top.

What are the other sizes?

20cm and 30cm.

What is it made of?

Aluminium, with a rustic antique brass finish.

How do I look after it?

Wash with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
