Description

Five slender arms, each ending in a small flared cup for a dinner candle, with the cups set at five different heights and the tallest in the middle. There is no base and no foot: every arm curves down from its cup and turns through a deep U at the bottom, and those bends are what the piece stands on. It is 45cm tall and 30cm across in both directions, and hammer marks run the length of every arm.

Thirty centimetres in each direction is a wide footprint and the arms sprawl rather than gather, so it wants a run of sideboard or console rather than the middle of a laid table. Five flames at five heights read as a group rather than a row, and because the arms are thin the metal almost disappears once the candles are lit. At 1.58kg it stays where it is put.

The metal is aluminium, worked and finished by hand. The tool marks left along the arms are part of how the piece is made rather than a fault in it, so no two come out with the arms at quite the same angles. Mbata also runs as a candlestick in three heights. The candles are not included.

Frequently Asked

How many candles does it hold?

Five, at five different heights.

What candles does it take?

Dinner candles, one in each cup.

How much room does it need?

30cm in each direction, and it stands 45cm tall.

What is it made of?

Aluminium, with an antique brass finish.

How do I look after it?

Wash with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off the finish. Stand the candles securely, keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
