Description
This is a pair of stoneware espresso cups, each holding 112ml and measuring 6cm across and 6.5cm tall. That capacity settles the question of use: it is a proper espresso cup for a short, strong coffee, not a mug for tea. Each cup has a rounded belly that narrows towards a slightly flared rim, with a neat loop handle, and both are hand-painted in blue with leaves, lemons and a scalloped band of feathered leaf shapes. The two are painted as a pair rather than as twins: on one the scalloped band runs round the rim, on the other it circles the base, so they sit together happily without matching exactly.
We like them on the kitchen counter beside the coffee machine, ready for the first cup of the morning, and on the table at the end of a dinner with friends, when a small espresso is all anyone wants. Because there are two, they make an easy daily ritual for a couple, and a thoughtful present for anyone who has just bought a coffee machine or a stovetop pot. The size works for more than espresso, too: a macchiato, a little hot chocolate, or a few spoonfuls of chocolate mousse after a meal.
The cups are 100% stoneware, finished with hand-painted decoration on a solid glaze, and stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing clay that holds heat well. Care is simple: they go in the dishwasher and the microwave, and they can go in the oven as well, so there is no need to keep them for best or wash them by hand. The hand painting gives the lines a loose, lively quality that a printed pattern would not have. For a sunny breakfast tray, set them on a wooden board with a bowl of lemons and a jug of milk; the styling props shown are not included.

Can they go in the dishwasher and the microwave?
Yes. Both cups go in the dishwasher and the microwave, and they can go in the oven as well, so they cope happily with everyday use.
What material is used for these cups?
They are 100% stoneware, with hand-painted decoration on a solid glaze. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing clay that holds heat well.
