Description

The Maxi S/01 is a pendant light with a long, slender shade that swells gently through the middle and tapers towards each end. The shade is pleated Cream Translucent Ribbon, so when the light is on it passes through the ribbon and the whole shade glows, reading as one soft column rather than a bright point. Its light source is an integrated LED, which means there is no bulb to buy or change. The fitting itself is made of iron and brass, runs at 230V, and hangs on a drop of up to 280cm.

We think it is most at home in a living room or hung over a dining table, where its height gives the room a clear centre. The long drop suits rooms with generous ceiling height, and two or three hung at different heights look good where there is space for them. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry indoor rooms only. It comes in two versions, and you choose the one that suits your room. The Bottom installation, with switch version plugs in and has its own switch, with cable lengths of 40cm and 200cm, so no wiring work is needed. The Upper installation version is wired in to the mains, and it is for a qualified electrician to install.

Look closely and the ribbon is pleated into fine vertical bands that run the full length of the shade, with slim horizontal rings marking its sections. Those pleats give the surface a gently striped texture, lit or unlit. With an integrated LED there is no bulb to replace, so the decision that matters is the version: choose the plug-in Bottom installation, with switch where you would rather avoid wiring work, or the Upper installation for a fitting wired in for good. The Bottom installation, with switch version: it comes with a European plug, so you will need a UK adaptor to use it in a UK socket.
