Mavu Large Giant Glass Bauble - Rustic Bronze & Petrol

The larger of the two Mavu giant baubles: a blown glass sphere 20cm in diameter, and 25cm overall once the collar and the hanging ring are counted. No part of the surface is flat colour. Gold pools in the middle of one face and thins out into rust and a deep green towards the edges, with dark pitting scattered through it and fine veining running between, so the sphere reads more like weathered metal than like glass. A fluted metal collar closes the neck, and a dark green ribbon runs through the ring above it.

It hangs beside the smaller Mavu. At 20cm across and 0.615kg it wants a clear space around it and a fixing that will take the weight: a window catch, a hook in a beam, the centre of a mantel arrangement, or the strongest branch on a tree, low down and close to the trunk. Hung where it can turn, the gold face comes round and goes again.

The sphere is blown from recycled glass and then coloured by smoke: mineral vapours meet the surface as the glass cools, and the veining, the iridescence and the pitted patches are what they leave behind. The process is not repeatable, so the balance of gold, rust and green falls differently on every sphere. Mavu also comes at 15cm across, and there is a set of four smaller Mavu baubles in bronze and green.

How big is it?

20cm across the sphere and 25cm to the top of the ring. The smaller Mavu is 15cm across.

How heavy is it?

0.615kg, so it needs a branch or a fixing that will take that.

Are they all identical?

No. The colour comes from mineral vapours reacting with hot glass, which cannot be repeated exactly, so the gold, the rust and the green fall differently on every sphere.

What does it hang on?

A dark green ribbon, run through the ring on the collar.

How do I look after it?

Take the dust off with a dry, soft cloth and handle it with care. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners will damage the finish, so keep them away from it. It is for indoor use only.
