Description

A set of four Christmas baubles in recycled glass, each 8cm across and finished by a smoke reactive method. Mineral vapours meet the surface of the glass as it cools out of the molten state and leave behind a dense mottled speckle, a shift of colour across the surface and a scatter of pitted texture. The tones run through bronze, emerald and a deep indigo under a subtle shine.

At 8cm across these are a middling size: large enough to carry a branch on their own and small enough to sit several together. They hang on a tree or group in a bowl, and in a bowl the veining and the pitting are seen from above and close to rather than at arm length on a branch. Four will fill a small bowl or spread across one side of a tree.

The glass is recycled and the surface is made during the cooling rather than applied afterwards, which is why no two are ever quite alike: the speckle gathers differently, the colour shifts in different places and the pitting falls where it falls. The Mavu range also holds a giant bauble in a small and a large size, in bronze and petrol.
