Description
Our Marcello abacus puts a counting frame and a writing board into one neat piece. A green board fills the top half, and below it rows of beads slide along rods set across the open frame, ready for counting, adding and taking away. It is made from plywood and beech, and measures 40cm by 40cm while standing just 4cm from front to back, so it gives a child a generous working area without taking up much room. Beech is a hard, close-grained wood that stands up well to everyday handling, and at 1KG the whole wooden abacus is easy to carry from one room to another.
It belongs in a playroom, a child's bedroom or a quiet homework spot. Set it upright at the back of a desk or on top of a chest of drawers, against the wall, and it becomes a little learning station. A child can slide beads along to count, add and take away, then write the sum or the answer on the board just above the beads. The board is just as good for spelling out a name, a game of noughts and crosses or a quick drawing, and the ledge along the bottom of the frame gives a handy place to rest the things used for writing. It makes a thoughtful birthday or Christmas present for a child starting to find numbers fun.
The construction is simple: a square frame with the board set into its upper half and the rods fixed across the open lower half, each carrying its beads from one end to the other. Its slim frame also tucks neatly onto a deep bookshelf. For a tidy play area, pair it with a low wooden table and stool and a small basket for paper and pencils close at hand; the styling props shown are not included.

Frequently Asked
What materials make up the abacus?
It is made from plywood and beech. Beech is a hard, close-grained wood that copes well with the handling a toy gets every day.
How big is the abacus?
It measures 40cm by 40cm and is just 4cm from front to back, and it weighs 1KG, so it is easy to move from room to room.
What is the recommended age for the abacus?
The maker recommends it from 3 years. Children can use the beads for counting and simple sums, and the board for writing and drawing.
Can children write on the board?
Yes. The green board across the top half is there for writing and drawing, so a child can work a sum out on the beads and write the answer on the board.
