Description

Three round baubles, each 7cm across, with a pattern worked into the metal by hand and a different one on every ball: a grid of small crosses on the first, rows of fine chevrons on the second, and bands of both on the third. The brass is warm and bright, so the raised edge of every mark catches light while the ground behind it stays dark. Each bauble hangs from a brown velvet ribbon through a ring at the top.

Seven centimetres is a middling size for a bauble, large enough to read on its own along a branch and small enough to hang the three of them together. The patterns work by reflection rather than by colour, so they show where tree lights or a lamp reach them and go quiet in the depth of a tree. Hung together against a dark ground, the marks carry the light.

The baubles are aluminium under a brass finish, worked with traditional hand tools, which is why the marks run at their own angles on every one. The ties are brown velvet. Manya runs a set of bell shaped baubles in the same brass alongside these.
