Description

Three bell shaped baubles in brass, each 8.5cm tall and 6.5cm across the mouth, with a small clapper hanging below. Every bell carries a different pattern worked into the metal by hand: rows of small scale marks on the first, ranks of fine vertical dashes on the second, a band of zigzag on the third. Each hangs from a brown velvet ribbon through a ring at the crown.

A bell hangs differently from a sphere. The cone is heavier at the mouth than at the crown, so it settles level quickly and stays still, and the clapper gives the shape a point where it ends rather than a curve. Three of them at 8.5cm run along a branch or a garland, and the marks in the metal show wherever tree lights or a lamp reach the brass.

The bells are aluminium under a brass finish. The patterns are worked with traditional hand tools, so no two bells in a set match and the marks run at their own angles on each. The ties are brown velvet. Manya runs a set of round baubles in the same brass alongside these.
