Description

The Malia side plate is a shallow round plate, 22.5cm across and 2.5cm deep, thrown in stoneware. Narrow flutes run out from a smooth glazed well to the edge, close enough together to read as a band of texture around the rim, and a thin brown line is painted by hand around that edge and repeated beneath it. The glaze is a soft greyish cream that pools a shade deeper in the well and thins to near white over the ribs.

A 22.5cm plate is the one for bread, a starter or a pudding beside a larger dinner plate. The well is dished rather than flat and holds 150ml, so a dressing or a few olives stay where they are put. At 2.5cm deep it stacks low. Stood on edge, the flutes and the brown line draw the outline of the rim.

The plate is stoneware, shaped on a potter's wheel and finished with a reactive glaze. A reactive glaze moves as the kiln heats it, so the mottling in the well and the weight of brown around the rim come out differently on every plate, and the rim itself carries a slight wave from being finished by hand. Malia runs to other pieces for the table. Each plate is sold singly.
