Description
The Makala is a tealight holder cut from a reclaimed mancala board, 53cm long and 15cm across. Fourteen hollows are carved into it: two rows of six down the length of the block, and a larger round well at each end where the board widens into a rounded lobe. The timber is 3.5cm thick and mid brown, and it carries the splits, saw marks and worn edges of the board it was.
Every hollow takes a tealight, so fourteen flames run in two lines down the middle of a table. At 53cm it is long enough to hold the centre of a dining table or a coffee table on its own, and at 3.5cm high it stays below the line of sight across a table where a candlestick would not. The two end wells are wider than the row hollows, so a tealight sits in them with space around it.
The wood is reclaimed, so every board carries its own grain, splits and wear and no two are the same. The hollows are the original playing pits of the game, which is played across Africa, the Middle East and Asia, and the surface has been refined while the aged finish was kept. Tealights are not included.

Frequently Asked
How many tealights does it hold?
Fourteen. Two rows of six down the middle, and one in each rounded end.
Are tealights included?
No.
What is it made from?
Reclaimed antique wood. Each holder was a mancala board before it was a tealight holder, and it keeps the original carved pits and the patina of the game board.
Will every one look the same?
Not exactly. The boards are reclaimed, so the imperfections and the weathered finishes differ from piece to piece and no two are the same.
How should it be looked after?
Do not use chemical cleaners on it. Wipe it regularly with a cloth to stop dust building up.
Does it get hot in use?
Yes. Position the candles securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
