Description

The M3.5 x 35mm extension stud is a threaded steel connector with a nickel-plated finish, designed to extend the reach of standard M3.5 screws when fitting faceplates, sockets and switches over deeper-than-standard back boxes. One end has external M3.5 threads that screw into the back box fixing holes; the other end is a threaded female socket that accepts a standard M3.5 screw.

Used in electrical installation where plasterers or builders have recessed back boxes deeper than the 10-12mm typical depth, leaving insufficient screw reach to secure the faceplate or accessory. The 35mm stud adds approximately 20-30mm of effective reach depending on how far the original screw was embedded. This removes the need to source longer screws in non-standard lengths or to pack out the back box with washers, both of which slow installation and create stock complexity for trade users.

The nickel plating provides corrosion resistance in domestic, commercial and light industrial environments. The stud is supplied in a 10-pack without individual barcoding, intended for bulk stock in trade vans or contractors' inventories. Each stud is 5.5mm wide across the hexagonal body, allowing it to be tightened with a spanner if needed, though hand-tightening is usually sufficient.

What problem does this solve?

When a back box is set deeper than standard (more than 10-12mm behind the finished wall surface), the screws supplied with faceplates and sockets are too short to reach the fixing holes securely. This extension stud bridges the gap, allowing standard-length screws to be used without sourcing non-standard long screws.

How much reach does it add?

The 35mm stud adds approximately 20-30mm of effective reach, depending on how much of the stud is threaded into the back box. This varies by installation but is sufficient for most deep-set back boxes encountered in plasterboard and dot-and-dab wall construction.

Is it compatible with all M3.5 screws?

Yes. The threaded female end accepts any standard M3.5 screw, including those supplied with Knightsbridge faceplates, other accessory brands, and aftermarket packs. The external M3.5 threads fit standard back box fixing holes.

Can it be tightened with a tool?

The 5.5mm hexagonal body allows the stud to be gripped with a spanner if needed, but hand-tightening is usually sufficient for secure installation. Overtightening is not recommended as it may damage the threads in plastic back boxes.
