Description
The Loko is a stool with a solid mango wood seat on a bent iron frame, standing 76cm to the top of the seat. The seat is carved in a saddle shape, dished through the middle with a raised lip behind and a waisted front edge, and the wood is left pale and unstained so the grain runs openly across the top. The frame is made from two lengths of round iron, each bent into a continuous loop, so the stool rests on two runners rather than four separate feet, and a curved bar crosses between them as a footrest.
At 76cm to the seat this is a bar height stool rather than a counter height one, and it goes at a bar, a high kitchen island or a tall work bench. The footprint is 38cm by 28cm, so several will sit along a standard island without touching. There is no back, and the dish carved into the seat is what holds a sitter in place; the footrest crosses low on the frame rather than just under the seat.
The seat is mango wood and the frame is iron under a rust finish, which reads a dark brown rather than an orange and carries the marks of the bending along its length. Mango is grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, which is how the wood becomes available at all and how the same trees give the growers a second income. Each seat is carved by hand, so the dish, the outline and the run of the grain differ from stool to stool.

Frequently Asked
How high is the seat?
76cm. There is no back, so the top of the seat is the full height of the stool.
Does it have a footrest?
Yes, a curved iron bar crossing the frame low down.
What is the frame made of?
Iron, under a rust finish.
Will every stool look the same?
No. The seat is carved by hand from mango wood, so the dish, the outline and the grain differ from one to the next.
How do I look after it?
Rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the wood with a cloth to nourish and protect it, bearing in mind that oil may darken the tone. The finish can mark where liquid sits on it, so blot any spill straight away with a dry cloth, and do not use chemical cleaners. The colour may change over time.
