Description

A square of handwoven cotton, 75cm by 75cm overall, set on a plain off white mount inside a dark stained mango wood frame. The weave changes across the width: the outer bands are worked in a thick, knobbled loop that stands off the surface, while the centre runs flatter and closer. A diamond sits at the middle, picked out in short dashes of a greyish brown yarn with a small ladder shape at its heart. The edges of the panel are left raw and slightly uneven where the weaving stopped.

At 75cm square and 8cm deep this is one large piece rather than part of a group, and it hangs where a single frame has to carry a wall: over a sideboard, above a bed head, or on the return wall of a hallway. Hung above a low chest, the weave reads as texture from across the room and the diamond only resolves closer to. The frame is a flat, dark stained profile, and the woven panel sits proud of the mount rather than flush with it.

The panel is cotton and the frame is mango wood. It is woven on a traditional Indian handloom, one of the oldest crafts still worked there, and the braided cotton is laid in by hand, so no two panels carry the same density of loops or the same line through the diamond. The tones are the natural greys and creams of the undyed fibre rather than a dyed colour.
