Laya Small Carved Wood Dining Table - Chocolate Brown

The Laya is a round dining table, 120cm across and 76cm high, carried on a single turned column rather than on legs. The column swells into a heavy baluster at its middle and stands on a stepped round foot, all of it turned by hand, and the top is made up from boards laid side by side and picked to run together. The whole table is finished in a deep chocolate brown that leaves the grain and the knots showing through.

A central column means nothing stands at the edge of the table: chairs go anywhere round the 120cm circle without meeting a leg. The top sits 76cm from the floor, which is standard dining height, and a round top of this size suits a square room or a kitchen corner where a rectangle would leave awkward ends. At 72.1kg it takes two people to lift, so it is set down once.

The top and the base are mango wood and neem wood. Mango is a by-product of the fruit harvest, cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, and the boards for each top are chosen to sit well together rather than matched exactly, so no two tops read the same.
